Institute of Systems Optimization

During the last decade, the Institute of Systems Optimization evolved into a center of excellence for multi-sensor guidance, navigation and control systems.

The analyses and development of the newest methods concerning multi-sensor guidance, navigation and control systems are performed in close cooperation with partners of the industry, mainly from the aerospace sector. This includes the development of the algorithms, the implementation in software and the design of the hardware as well as the system test.



The core competence of the ITE is the fusion of different complementary sensors, like gyroscopes, accelerometers, magnetic field sensors, barometric height sensors, satellite-based navigation systems (GNSS), Radar-based, laser-based and image-based aiding.

The methodology comprises the design of complex systems, resulting in the interaction of subsystems of different technologies (electronic, MEMS, optical…). The analysis and optimized integration of the systems intelligence are examined in both the subsystems and the main system.

Several orders for aerospace applications, for example the Airbus, consisting of multi-sensor data-fusion for navigation systems have been completed successfully by the ITE. Furthermore, applications for reference measurements have been developed for the automotive industries.

The project AirQuad includes the development of a micro aerial vehicle for security and rescue operations with capabilities of autonomous flight, teaming, object tracking and geo-localization.

The IndoorGuide is an indoor localization and guidance system which has been developed at the ITE. The device determines the location of users, creates detailed maps during deployment and provides guidance. It serves rescue and security forces, visually impaired and blind people as well as commercial users.

Based on the abilities to analyze complex systems and to determine the mutual dependencies of their subsystems, the fusion of a highly optimized system is the main objective of the ITE's scope of lectures. These are the essential prerequisites for a successful career in the field of a multidisciplinary systems engineer.
